One of the true superstars of boxing, three time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez has had a personal beef with young Mexican prospect Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, specially after Canelo challenged Marquez to a fight during a televised program in México. Now during another televised program, Marquez jabbed at Alvarez for failing to make the contracted weight of 150-pounds for tonight’s fight with Matthew Hatton.

“It shows you that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a champion. I mean how can you fail to make the contracted weight that you imposed on your opponent, and doing it in your first world title shot is unbelieveable,” Marquez said.

“What I said is true, you train to lose weight. Your first opponent is the scale. You have to prepare to beat the weight and then have a strategy to beat your foe, but he failed big time after so much hype. This is unacceptable, irresponsible, no more no less.”

Regarding an interview by Televisa, after the weigh-in, where Saul stated that Hatton and his team overreacted to the situation and the fight should have been at the full limit of 154 for the WBC title – Marquez said the following:

“He’s trying to fool the public but it doesn’t work anymore, no matter how much Televisa made it look like it was true. Everybody knows that the contract was for 150 even when the title is at stake. The fans know better and they are unhappy. Anyway, Canelo should win this easy becaause he has the talent and now he is bigger and stronger than his opponent who is basically is a super lightweight or a welterweight at the most.”
