Canelo Vs Mayweather Tickets

By Rick Reeno: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has a very good feeling about the possibility that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) will break pay-per-view records on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo Vs Mayweather Tickets

Schaefer was able to finalize the fight on Wednesday night, as the unbeaten boxers will battle for the WBC/WBA Unified/Ring junior middleweight titles at a catch-weight of 152-pounds.

Mayweather’s pay-per-view fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, which took place on May 4th, will exceed 1 million pay-per-view buys, according to Schaefer and Showtime Sports VP Stephen Espinoza.

Earlier this year, Mayweather signed an exclusive six fight agreement with Showtime. It was Mayweather’s first pay-per-view appearance with the network.

While Schaefer and Espinoza stand firm with their statements that Mayweather-Guerrero will exceed a seven-figure buyrate, a number of insiders are still claiming the event only generated between 850,000 and 900,000 buys.

Schaefer believes there are certain parties who are spreading misinformation to downsize the event’s success.

“Mayweather-Guerrero created more revenues in one night than most promoters have made in their lifetime, combined. All of these jealous people out there. What have they done? Nobody cares,” Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

While Mayweather’s star power carried his pay-per-view with Guerrero, Canelo is regarded as the biggest rising superstar in boxing. His April unification Austin Trout drew 40,000 fans to the Alamodome in Texas. Canelo generates huge television ratings in Mexico and draws thousands of fans to his promotional functions.

Schaefer doesn’t know if Mayweather-Canelo is capable of breaking the all-time record set by the 2007 HBO pay-per-view between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya [over 2.4 million buys] – but he feels confident that Mayweather-Canelo might break other pay-per-view records and give the all-time record holder a serious threat.

“I’m not going to say that this fight will break the all-time record established by Mayweather and De Le Hoya. But if there is one fight that has the possibility to do that – I think this fight is the one, because Mayweather is clearly today a bigger star than when he fought De La Hoya, and then you have Saul Alvarez who is as big as Oscar,” Schaefer said.

“And then you put these two guys together now, both undefeated, on the best pay-per-view weekend [Mexican Independence Day] – you have all of the ingredients to make this a record breaker. And will it turn out to be [a record breaker]? Who knows? But one thing I do know is that its the biggest fight in the sport, regardless of weight classes, and it’s going to be a hell of a fight as well because you never see Canelo Alvarez in a bad fight.
