By Rick ReenoGolden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer informed BoxingScene.com that a deal was reached for WBC 154-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs) to collide with WBA beltholder Austin Trout (26-0, 14KOs) in a high stakes Showtime televised unification on April 20th, likely at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Earlier today, Schaefer confirmed to BoxingScene that Canelo was no longer a part of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero pay-per-view undercard, which is scheduled to take place on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“It is done, it is done,” a very enthusiastic Schaefer confirmed to BoxingScene.com. “I’m still trying to finalize it but it looks pretty good [to take place] at the Alamodome in San Antonio and we have it on hold. People are comparing this fight to Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Pernell Whitaker [who fought to a draw at the Alamodome in 1993].”

“I’m happy it got done, because now we delivered another fight that the fight fans wanted to be delivered. I’m really thrilled. This is really great news for fight fans. Because now you get to see Mayweather vs. Guerrero, which I think right now at 147 is the most dangerous fight you could make. When I read the blogs, the stories and the comments, there is quite a sizable number of experts who are picking Guerrero to win that fight.”

“And then you have a couple of weeks before that, fans can see a Mexican superstar like Canelo in a world title unification. All of these of those people who say Canelo is afraid to fight someone like Austin Trout, I think they can all shut up now – because Canelo is not afraid to fight anybody, and he will show the world on April 20th that he is the man at 154 and that nobody can or will beat him.”

For several weeks, Schaefer was working very hard behind the scenes to make Canelo-Trout possible for the big Showtime pay-per-view on May 4th, but the agreement hit a major snag in the last few days.

As BoxingScene reported earlier, Canelo was refusing to fight on the Mayweather-Guerrero undercard – unless Mayweather contractually agreed to fight him on September 14th.

“[If] Floyd does not sign our agreement for September, we are not going to fight on the evening of May 4th, and then we will determine if we’ll fight on April 20th or the week that follows the May 4th date,” Canelo stated.

Mayweather rejected Canelo’s demand and he did have a strong position. He refuses to look past his upcoming fight with Guerrero by already signing to face another opponent in September.

If Canelo and Mayweather win their upcoming fights, then Schaefer will explore the possibility of the two of them fighting each other later in the year.

In order to move Canelo-Trout to April 20, Schaefer and Showtime were forced to push back the anticipated featherweight fight between Abner Mares and Daniel Ponce De Leon. While it was initially being circulated that Mares-Ponce De Leon would land on May 18th, both Golden Boy and Showtime officials have told BoxingScene that is not the case, at least for the moment, as several possible scenarios for that fight are being explored.

“[Canelo] basically was willing to be on the [Mayweather-Guerrero] undercard if he had a signed deal in place to face Floyd Mayweather [and] that didn’t happen. Floyd feels, and correctly, that this is a big fight, a dangerous fight with Robert Guerrero. He’s not looking past that. We’re just going to see what happens. If Canelo wins, and then Mayweather wins – we’ll take it from there,” Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
